PRIME MINISTER’S Wi-Fi ACCESS NETWORK INTERFACE (PM-WANI)

What is (PM-WANI)?
PM-WANI stands for Prime Minister’s WI-Fi Access Network Interface scheme. This initiative’s objective is to elevate wireless Internet connectivity in the country with the purpose of creating a Digital India. This scheme aims to create public Wi-Fi networks for delivery of broadband services to the people.

It is envisaged that last-mile broadband connectivity, through which the consumer accesses broadband services, will be via a network of public Wi-Fi access points. The user can choose the Public Wi-Fi network of his/her choice, pay an amount – either online or through voucher – and use the network till the balance is exhausted.

Why (PM-WANI) ?

This scheme will be a major boost for use of Broadband Internet in India because of the following:

It will increase Broadband access through Public Wi-Fi Hotspots across the country.

No Licence fees, registration charges or any fees shall be payable to Department of Telecom under the Last-mile Public Wi-Fi Hotspot system.

It will provide a massive boost to entrepreneurship by allowing micro and small businesses to leverage Broadband through Public Wi-Fi through a profitable business model.

This WANI shall be assisted by the following:

Public Data Office (PDO): It will help deliver broadband services to subscribers.

Public Data Office Aggregator (PDOA): It will play the role of an aggregator of PDOs and manage the Authorization and Accounting.
